Supply Chain Management

Summary

BEL Valves recognises the significant challenges facing the oil and gas industry as certain areas of the North Sea mature. In doing so we at BEL appreciate that our ability to compete in the future will depend critically on rapid and continual improvement in performance, as well as on greater collaboration with our customers and suppliers to ensure that this performance can be delivered cost effectively with the resources available.

As such BEL Valves is an active participating member of a number of UK Government and industry led initiatives; namely PILOT/ILT, FPAL and PPWG Supplier Code of Practise administered by PILOT.
Our strategy is to Champion these initiatives from as high a level as possible within our organisation and to pass the learning’s down through the management team, through various meetings and forums. To this end our Chairman and Managing Director play active roles in these initiatives.

In addition to this BEL Valves’ has implemented the K2 Business Improvement Initiative within the company to take forward the learning of the Oliver Wight organisation and practices taken from the aforementioned bodies, our Customers and our Suppliers.

FPAL - First Point Assessment
(www.fpal.co.uk)

First Point Assessment is an organisation which is owned and governed by oil & gas industry companies representing operators, contractors and suppliers (See attached List). Established in December 1996 its purpose is as follows:

To provide purchasers with a structured way of identifying and selecting potential
suppliers and contractors;
To provide suppliers with an easy mechanism of advising their interest in supplying
products or services;
To understand and record actual performance to facilitate continuous improvement;
To eliminate duplication and unnecessary repetitive activities within the bid process.

The FPAL concept is intended to minimise inefficiencies in Supply Cahin Management (SCM), and as a learning organisation, provide opportunities for improvement through the enhanced knowledge of company strengths and weaknesses.

FPAL collects information on registered suppliers, assesses their capability across a number of different attributes, and records the agreed result as a profile. This data is supported by co-ordinating feedback of actual performance, as assessed between the supplier and client, across the same attributes and displaying the consolidated results in a profile.

BEL Valves
as an active participating member and registered supplier (10040191) in FPAL for valves, actuators and controls has found this to be an extremely useful tool in highlighting both our strengths and weaknesses.

First Point allows us to be truly benchmarked against our competition in a formal manner, helping to take away the informal opinions generated over many years, which can be based on one bad experience. It provides an excellent opportunity to formally close out contracts and debate performance.

A major benefit that FPAL brings to BEL, as a company is that it allows us to identify our own strengths and weaknesses. We see FPAL as a tool, which we can use to focus on particular areas of performance and continually improve our service in those areas that require it.

With the closer contact that we have with our customers through the assessment process we are able get a window in to our clients difficulties and we have been able to offer suggestions on ways to improve the way we work together on future orders to our mutual benefit.

BEL Valves
are currently using this process with our suppliers as a means of improving the service, support and technical buy-in a level down in the Supply Chain.

BEL Valves
see First Point as a tool that we can use to develop both ourselves, our clients and our suppliers. It reinforces our internal commitment for improvement and allows us to be judged fairly in our market.
